World Championship GPS Triangle Sport 2026, Oschatz Germany.

37 pilots from 10 countries started in this years GPS Triangle Sport class that is organized every two years (Light class in beetween).

Pilots meeting and opening ceremony were done on Sunday 2.August but many arrived some days earlier. Camp site came up on a huge grass field and we were ready to start Monday morning.

We start with some results for those that dont want to scroll all the way down 😉

Here is what the first 10 pilots flew during the Championship:

3rd time Pike Paradigm is used for Gold medal (Philip, Philip, Florian)

Pik3 Paradigm V had both the fastest flight (Ralph 156,4km/h) and the most triangles (Timo 24laps)

First competition day (we flew Monday 3.aug to Friday 09-18:00 and saturday 8.aug last round no later than 12:00).

It was getting hotter and hotter thruout the day and peaked around 32C in the shadow. Conditions started weak but quickly developed to small lift here and there before it suddenly became huge lift periods but also a few high sink periods. One round could have 22-24 laps and the next 9. Wind was weak and mainly from east but also changed to westerly and a change in landing direction for the last round (we get some points for landing on a marked corridor). A brake for lunch was done (with model display flying of various models) but we still managed 3 whole rounds of 4 groups (30min flying time and 9min launch window). The organizers have done a lot to get the place ready with small bars, grill, breakfast area and lots of people helping out. Not all clubs are so eager to do an event and have so many volounteers!

No big crashes - only a clack was heard so all was safe so far. CD supervises the landings so that all gets safe down and out of the way.

Day two over.

Puuuh what a day. We started with speed as i wrote earlier and a small shower. A high wind increase swept thru us but then it settled quite a bit with some good rounds and some fluffy thermals. We ended with some good thermals.

CD Marianne kept us strict in starting and landing. Very good CD and line Manager. Thank you!

Chris from South-Africa had a mid-air and just got his model down with a broken spar just hanging on the skin. Also some elevator damage. The other model went down into 100 pieces sadly. Also one crashed in speed last leg. Chris repaired the elevator and fixed the midsection with cyano and roving/54g cloth together with team mate Jo from Norway so he could fly another round. In the evening he opted for not going on a tour and instead replaced the spar rovings with proper epoxy with his team mate. Now he was able to do another speed run.

3rd day over.

We were expecting some rain but predictions has not been so good last days. Not only South-Africa/Norway team repairing for others as you see on picture. Jaroslav from Samba Model repaired many many models during the week as he often does on Championships.

There came a storm during night and some tents were a bit "fluttered around" but we dont think anything was damaged. We had some wind and a few drops of rain but it calmed down a lot and became almost completely calm in the end of the day. Some rounds were won by launching late and waiting very long for new lift cycle to develop and some amazing skills in preserving energy was shown. Possibly many pilots flew very light in the heat and calm conditions. Pilots seemed a bit more tensioned as there was 2 midair crashes today while circling in same thermal. 2 of those were spectacular saves were one was missing the nose but still flew home (backup battery in the back and CG was crazy back off course) and the other lost both tips and flew slight aerobatic on the way home. Both tips recovered and everything but 1 tip and joiners were 100%. Even guidepin holes were intact. Check the video. Jaroslav Vostřel from Samba Model was asked if he could repair it as many models already repaired this week. The answer was: "no - call Eva" to order 🤣 Eva Vostřelová is the person that receives all communication and Jaroslav's wife 😉 On picture you see Jaroslav repairing the other model that was missing a part of the center panel.

In our temporary "service center", we repaired two PIKE PARADIGM center panels after a head-on collision. Thanks to the FRC (Full Rohacell Core) construction, the foam in the leading edge absorbed the impact, and the spar remained undamaged. Unlike the classic shell construction, the collision did not end in disaster. As you can see in the photos, the center panels were fully functional again after a short repair. 🤩

4th day

We started as always with a briefing and decided for safety to put a no fly zone on the city downwind. We also have some fun task every morning with local word questions and a prize for something well done the day before. That is possible now during a competition to put in a new safety zone thanks to good work by Andrej that runs rcmodelspot.com

Today they granted some switzerland land on field to one pilot as seen on picture 🤣

Amazing it was cold but thermals were active with 1,5m/s already at 09:00 for the first start..

We started with speed in some wind conditions Not easy starting downwind but managable to start under 400m and under 120km/h.

The first three places were taken by pilots flying the PIKE PARADIGM V-tail 🚀

1st Benjamin Dähn GER – 153.3 km/h

2nd Jaroslav Vostřel CZE – 147.1 km/h

3rd Randolph Brömer GER – 146.8 km/h.

Then we had a small break and aerobatic "show" by big glider before going to round 11. Conditions were windy and one have to pick up upwind and follow something to the downwind town safety zone to gain some altitude. The new safety zone is a bit close but for sure equal for all. One pilot actually forgot to update his task 😒 . Medium to hot weather today and we drink as much water as possible and use the kiosk to buy food and ice cream.

Alkohol free beer could be consumed from proper kegs in the bar. Or alcohol when flying finished

It was a hard day for some and fantastic climbing on the list for others. The top also had some changes as some got away for a killer round and others missed many laps and needed to use another throw away (worst score does not count). With the safety zone we implemented it does do it more interresting but also very annoying when you see others 300m away in a different thermal can spec out while you have to leave with half max height. BTW lunch was skipped today but doing this kind of contest makes enough time in beetween to grab something to eat. Hard work 30min and then 30min off time is great 👍 We had a lot of birds around today. Some showing the real thing and others small flimsy stuff or nothing. Dont always trust them 🤣

Wednesday and Thursday were another two days with good weather, and 12 complete rounds were flown. However, the thermals were not as strong, so there were no flights with over 20 triangles like on the first two days. In some rounds, there were really few thermals, and the group winner got 1000 points for only 4 triangles. The order changes a lot after each round, and almost no pilots avoided a bad result.

In the evening there was a raffle with beautiful gifts from the sponsors. 3 last winners battled for the last prizes by taking on a frozen t-shirt. Very much fun for us other! Samba Model donated a voucher for a 50% discount on a PIKE PARADIGM to the raffle. Congratulations to the winner. 😃😃😃

World Championship GPS Triangle Sport 2026 - end of day 5

So how did the 5th day of the Championship go? Well thermals were forming even before we started at sharp 09:00 and it kept developing but not to the extreme. Just nicely forming with good lift giving us up to 2m/s average in the best ones (yes we found 4m/s higher up). A few misshaps but i dont think we lost models or hurt any tents today 😉 There was also painful sink for many as the medals faded away when we enter the last day and last round starts no later than 12:00. That means 3 hours and only two rounds (rd16 and 17). There has been plenty social events on this championship every evening were most pilots actually attend. The food is excellent, toilets clean and enough, extreme amount of volunteers and all of them smiling and recognicing us.

So new schedule was made and we started with speed as the conditions often are soft in the morning but thermals were already fairly good. In Sport class one as mentioned before have to start under 400m and under 120km/h. That means the start in speed is crucial for the one lap speed. After climbing to 400m one is not allowed to restart motor again. One even restarted by going to a thermal and climb to new 400m today (Andrej). For the podium it was still very tight on the scores and up to maybe 6 pilots could reach podium. Speed was won by Benjamin Dähn with a 154,9km/h (Paradigm) on the one triangle lap (1690m). Podium was changed again and we went to final round that was the 17 round this Championship. People were for sure tense and was nervous to loose their position or tried maybe too hard to gain. Only one can win of the 37 pilots. In the end Florian Griese, GER Paradigm V/Phantom) won with team mate Oliver Ladach, GER in second and Philip Kolb, GER in third. Congratulations. Team medals is also rewarded with 1st Oliver/Florian, 2nd Randolph/Ralph (both Paradigm V), 3rd Dani/Michael.

There was handmade diplomas for all by art students and prizes for Fastest flight by Ralph Losemann (Pike Paradigm) and most laps by Timo Feis (Pike Paradigm). All were different amd we voted for who would go nr.1 and down to 37 + teams diplomas. Very nice idea.

Totally we flew together 578 flights, 4493 triangles and 8678km !!
